Company culture. No matter where you turn, someone’s always talking about it. The problem is, not everyone knows how to implement it. While having happy hours and an in-office foosball table sounds great, building company culture isn’t just about having fun. It’s about employees who enjoy doing their job.

Determine Your Core Values

Company culture needs to encompass your goals, values and expectations of the company. It’s every business owner’s responsibility to figure out their core values.

Here are three questions that every business owner needs to ask to determine their core values:

  • What is the company’s sole purpose?
  • What are the company’s beliefs?
  • What is the company’s vision for the future?

The key to having a good company culture is making sure the employees feel like they fit in. If an employee feels like they don’t belong with the company, they won’t feel much pleasure working for it.

Put Value into Action

After determining what your values are, it’s time to put them into action. Creating good company culture can start from the tiniest things. Thank employees for the work they do. Something as simple as a genuine pat on the back for a job well done goes a long way. Employees want to know their time and hard work are appreciated.

Focus on the Now

Promising a rowdy weekend to your employees isn’t going to create the positive environment you want. While thinking about the future of your company is important, it’s just as important to focus on the present. Employees should always feel at home when they’re working.

Try implementing something for your employees to look forward to as they work. For example, make Mondays the days for group meetings with coffee and donuts. Just like in your own personal relationships, you need to interact with your employees without also acting like the boss.

Things to Think About

A thriving company culture can make or break your business. Employees who feel valued are more productive, less stressed and actually enjoy coming to work. If you’re not sure how to go about boosting morale, simply ask your employees. After all, where would you be without them?
